Apologies by the foookin’ sack load for not getting this blog to you sooner, but I honestly haven’t been that well the last few days and when I heard about swine flu I thought to myself, "Krusher, your day’s are numbered", and that all those times from the sordid ‘70’s when I waited in Soho rooms stinking of KY Jelly, spunk and a hint of smouldering rubber, whilst being told by someone that could have been anyone’s mother that “She won’t be long sir, she’s with another client,” that it had all finally caught up with me and I was going to the great sty in the sky!!!

However one visit to Dr. Arsediamond and I was reliably informed that death by wallowing in mud was out of the question as I was actually suffering from rock ‘n’ roll fever, probably caught from The Whybirds who played the Embassy Klub last Monday.

So if any of you glorious people that came down, put your hand in your pocket and paid to keep live music very much alive, are feeling a little strange, fear not, you did the right thing and swine flu with never raise it’s grunting snout in your direction.

But as always I seem to have got a little ahead of myself and should really tell you first about last weeks support band The Red-Eyed Suburbanites who consisted of a woman who has more rock ‘n’ roll history in her little finger than most bands can muster up in a lifetime. I am of course talking about the legendary Pippa Lang who was on vocal duties whilst tickling the ivories, Dave Mush guitar/backing vocals, Pete Westmore on bass, Michael Blythe blower extraordinaire of the flute and Dave ‘Spongey’ Wren bashing the drums.

They produced a most enjoyable set of original compositions that included Faces, Afterthought, Sonnet, You Do Me and The Cage all of which were warmly received by the audience and provided the perfect start to the night.

During the band change over I delved into my black book of all things round and shiny and played a few songs that I haven’t listened to for quite a while, some that went as far back as the late ‘60’s and quite a few from the early ‘70’s.

Now before I tell you about the Whybirds INSPIRATIONAL set, let me tell you about the first time that I saw them, which was December last year supporting the Quireboys at the Forum.

I came in shortly after they’d started but quickly became aware of the great songs that they were playing and turned to Quireboy keyboard tinkler Keith, who was standing next to me and asked what they were called and when he told me they were The Whybirds I honestly thought that they were a Byrds tribute band.

Now if you don’t know who the Byrds are I really don’t know where you’ve been but as they originated in 1964, and I know many of you weren’t even a twinkle in your dads ball sack back then, here’s a brief lesson in rock history.

The Byrds were an American rock and roll band formed in Los Angeles in 1964. They helped forge such subgenres as folk rock, space rock, psychedelic rock, and on their 1968 album Sweetheart of the Rodeo, which featured Gram Parsons, country rock. They underwent several line up changes, with only Roger McGuinn remaining the sole consistent member until the group's disbandment in 1973.

Songs that made them legends included covers of Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man and My Back Pages and Pete Seeger’s Turn! Turn! Turn!, as well as originals I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better, Eight Miles High and So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star way, way before Oasis were put together in Frankenrots laboratory!!

So back to the Forum gig and I’m waiting for the Whybirds to burst into any of the above mentioned songs whilst thinking to myself that I really must check out The Byrds back catalogue because the songs that I was hearing were foookin’ killers of the finest order!

However Keith whispered in my ear that they weren’t a Byrds covers band, but four young song writers who legendary US producer Elliot Mazer (Neil Young, The Band and of course The Byrds) was offering his services to without the band even being signed to some corporate arse suck of a record company.

I was truly gobsmacked this was a bunch of guys writing songs that most bands would sign a pact with Beelzebub to pen and not only that but they were from Bedford. British through and through!!!

I had to get them to play the Embassy Klub rock night and do you know what? I fooookin’ did!!!

And what a rip snorting rock ‘n’ roll beast of a set they played for us!! Kicking off with a song called Jenny, Can I Take A Ride that would not only sit perfectly on Exile On Main Street but would be an added bonus, quickly followed by three tracks from their self financed 2008 album in the shape of Turn Right (I’ll Turn Left), Springsteen eat your heart out, Make Me Numb and Four Little Letters, all delivered with more rock‘n’roll conviction than I’ve seen in a long time.

And so it went on, another nine songs including personal favourites The Losing End, What It Means, Girl Is On Fire, No Time To Think and Before I Go Crazy before myself and the audience insisted that they drag their poor sweating bodies back on stage for one more song and fook me what a song to finish with, The Who’s Leaving Here. Jesus on a stick, it didn’t get better than this.

So will you please show your appreciation for Luke Tuchscherer, drums ‘n’ vocals, Taff Thatcher, bass ‘n’ vocals, Dave Banks, guitar ‘n’ vocals and Ben Haswell, guitar ‘n’ vocals, droogies, boozers, strumpets and losers THE WHYBIRDS!!!!

Please check them out at www.thewhybirds.com and www.myspace.com/thewhybirds. They’re going to be MASSIVE!!!

Next weeks rock night is sadly cancelled as the dance floor has to be repaired and my liver replaced, but fear not we’ll be back on Monday, 11th May with NWOBHM champions Chariot (www.chariot-rocks.com) with support from Rotherhithe rockers Breakheart (www.breakheart.co.uk).

Hope to see you there and have a fookin’ rockin’ Bank holiday weekend!!!
